THE TRUE STORY

Year of release: 2012

Format: Novel

It is not words we should translate, but ideas.

Transmitting the message is not enough: we also need to reproduce the cultural, ideological and stylistic traits that come with it. This is the only way we can aspire to a translation that feels just like the original.

WHAT IT WAS FOR ME

At Nintendo's offices in Frankfurt, this project is still talked about as being one of the most complex undertakings of the last few years. As part of a team consisting of up to eight translators, my goal was to make sure that the dozens of characters in the game expressed themselves in a natural way while still preserving their own distinctive traits. This entailed dealing with wordplay and cultural references that were often difficult to reproduce in Spanish, not to mention the extensive research I had to go through in order to translate Blathers the owl's "master classes"...

Animal Crossing: Let's Go to the City (a.k.a. City Folk) was the third entry in this series of life simulators for the young and not so young, and marked its debut on Wii. Among its main additions are a new urban area (to which it owes its name) for the player to visit and real-time voice communication using the Wii Speak peripheral.
